International

International Student Program

Charles La Trobe P-12 College is situated in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne adjacent to La Trobe University and is one of Melbourne’s newest educational facilities. International students will study in new modern classrooms with access to the latest technology. All students in the college will have access to a Netbook computer as our curriculum has a strong technology focus.

Program Management

The International Student Manager and staff have experience in providing tuition, care and support to international students. The International Student Manager is available 24/7 if assistance is required. An extensive Orientation Program that includes information being provided during the pre–departure phase assists students’ transition to their new environment and life at Charles La Trobe College. Regular feedback is provided to parents via phone, email and visits to parents in their own country. Chinese and Vietnamese assistants support students in the classroom and are available for you to contact.

Transport

A wide range of tram, train and bus services are available for students to travel to the college. (Refer to our website for details)

Airport Pick up

A staff member from the college will pick your child up from the airport, take him/ her to their home stay and ensure they have settled into life in Melbourne.

Experienced homestay providers

We have a number of local families including Chinese and Vietnamese Australians who provide safe and secure accommodation for your child. Students will have their own room with study facilities. All meals are provided. Living in a homestay is an excellent way for a student to practise English and learn about Australian culture.

  • Students over the age of 18 may be given permission to move out of homestay accommodation providing written parental consent is given and student’s choice of location is deemed appropriate by the School.

Specialist Mathematics and Science Program Year 8 & 9

This program is designed for students who have an interest in Mathematics and Science and wish to study these areas in depth. Students will participate in activities based on the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The course will run on the college campus, Quantum Victoria Specialist Mathematics and Science Centre and at La Trobe University. Refer to our website for further information and application dates.

Scholarships

The college offers scholarships at years 7 & 9. These scholarships are awarded for Academic achievement and /or Leadership. The scholarship consists of two vouchers: Uniform $700 / Stationary $100 per year providing students meet academic requirements.

La Trobe University Partnership

Our partnership with La Trobe University enables our students to complete a range of programs with university staff on the university campus.

Reporting

Translated student reports will be sent home to parents three times a year. Parents are welcome to contact the college at any time to discuss their child’s progress.

Homework club

Our homework club provides students with individual assistance across all subject areas. This includes tutoring by La Trobe University students.

Uniform

Uniform is compulsory. New students will be assisted with the purchase of uniform on arrival. Black leather shoes must be worn with the college uniform; these may be purchased prior to arrival.

First Language Study

Students can study their first language at one of the Victorian School of Languages Centres located around Melbourne.

Careers Advice

Students will receive careers advice from year 7 -12. They are also assisted with their subject selection and application for tertiary study.

Wellbeing team

The Wellbeing team provides support to students, families and teachers around issues that may affect a students academic progress and general wellbeing. It consists of the Student Welfare Coordinator, College Chaplain, Secondary School Nurse (Health Promotion) and Educational Psychologist/Guidance Officer (NM Region).

Past students

Past students have achieved ATAR scores in the high nineties and have gone on to study at all of Melbourne’s top universities and TAFE colleges. Courses studied range from Bio Medical Science, Actuarial Studies, Commerce, Law, Business, Engineering, Design and Hospitality. A number of these students have been offered jobs in Melbourne, have married and become Australian citizens.

Local Community Facilities

The local area offers a wealth of community and health facilities including:

  • The Austin Hospital which students can access with their compulsory health insurance
  • Darebin and Banyule Council sports, leisure and library facilities
  • Access to a range of facilities at La Trobe University
  • The large Northland Shopping Centre and Preston market with ready access to Asian cuisine.
